All You Need To Know About ND/HND Nursing Programme in Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria

Before now, most schools and colleges in Nigeria offers a 3-year Basic Nursing programme which allows participants to become a Registered Nurse (RN) licensed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), recently, some schools of Nursing have been upgraded and certified by NBTE to run ND/HND programme, this has got some applicants and students confused and this is what I will be shedding lights on with this article. Read on as we answer Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) on ND/HND Nursing Programme in Colleges of Nursing in Nigeria.

What is all about ND Nursing?

ND Nursing programme was meant to give legal backing by the Federal Government for the award of ACADEMIC CERTIFICATES to Nurses who graduate from Nursing institutions. The ND/HND Nursing is a four-year UNINTERRUPTED programme i.e 2 years for ND and 2 years for HND. Students start with ND Nursing programme which is a non-terminal programme. The ND Nursing graduates with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit) will then proceed to HND Nursing. HND graduates shall proceed for a one-year mandatory Supervised Clinical Experience (Attachment) in an approved health facility or institution and after the Clinical Experience, then one-year NYSC.

Why ND Nursing Programme?

Graduates of Basic Nursing programme (the previous 3-year course) are not issued any legally backed academic certificate by their Institution, they are only issued a Testimonial by their Institution and a professional licence by Nursing of Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). So the ND Nursing programme was established to give legal backing by the Federal Government to Nursing institutions for the award of recognised Academic Certificates to Nursing graduates.

The ND/HND Nursing programme has been designed to allow for seamless academic progression of graduates along the already existing system of education in the country. It also takes cognizance of the new scheme of service for Nurses in Nigeria approved by the National Council of Establishment in 2016.

Will Schools of Nursing still run Basic Nursing Programme?

Yes, for schools that have not fully migrated to the ND/HND programe, they will still admit candidates for Basic Nursing programme but only from now to 2023. After 2023, the Colleges will no longer admit new students for Basic Nursing programme because it will be phased out by the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria.

What is the difference between Basic Nursing and ND Nursing Programme?

Basic Nursing graduates are not issued any legally backed academic certificate and the programme is for 3 years, they are only issued a Testimonial by their Institution and a professional licence by Nursing of Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN). While ND/HND Nursing graduates will be issued with legally backed academic certificates and professional licences and the program runs for 4 years.

Is HND Nursing Equivalent to BNSc Nursing Science?

Academically, HND Nursing is not equivalent to BNSc Nursing, as HND Nursing graduates are required to have PGD (Post Graduate Diploma) Nursing before proceeding to MSc (Master of Science) Nursing programme while BNSc Nursing can proceed to MSc Nursing without PGD Nursing. However, professionally they may be the same since both HND Nursing and BNSc Nursing graduates usually obtain 2 same professional licences, namely, Registered Nurse (RN) and Registered Midwife (RM) or Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN) licence.

What are the SSCE O’level Requirements for ND Nursing

Candidates must have a minimum of 5 credits including English Language, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at not more than two (2) sittings in WAEC, NECO or NABTEB. A combination of WAEC&WAEC, WAEC&NECO or NECO&NECO is accepted but NABTEB must be one sitting.

What are the JAMB Subject Combinations for ND Nursing?

JAMB subject combinations for ND Nursing are Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. Any combination apart from the above, will not be considered no matter the JAMB score.

Can apply with 2022 JAMB UTME Result?

NO. Because a previous year UTME result can not be used for the current admission year.

Can the Colleges of Nursing be chosen as Second Choice?

Candidates MUST choose any of these Colleges as the First Choice among ALL institutions. However, candidates that did not choose a College as First Choice during JAMB registration and now wish to choose the College, can apply for Change of Institutions through JAMB Portal and choose the College as First Choice before sitting for their Post-UTME test.

What is the Minimum JAMB Cutoff Mark?

Minimum cut-off marks is usually determined after every JAMB exam for each category of institutions during JAMB Policy Meeting on Admission. The minimum cut-off marks for ND Nursing is the same with the national minimum cut-off marks for Polytechnics. However, the College may the decide to increase its cut-off marks. For the year 2022, the minimum cut-off marks is 140. However, it may be the same or change for subsequent years. For example, OAUTHC School of Nursing cutoff mark is 150.

After Completing ND, can I Change to Another School or Leave School?

NO. The ND/HND Nursing is a four-year UNINTERRUPTED programme. Students starts with ND Nursing programme which is a non-terminal programme. The ND graduates with a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit) will then proceed for HND Nursing.

Is Proceeding from ND to HND Nursing Automatic?

YES, only if students earn a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit). However, where a student scores below a CGPA of 2.5, he/she shall be required to repeat ND II and earn minimum of CGPA 2.5 before proceeding to HND Nursing.

Will there be SIWES/IT Training during the ND Programme?

Students shall participate in Supervised Clinical Work Experience (SCWE) while in training. The period of the SCWEs would be in two parts of eight weeks each. The first part of SCWE shall be between the end of ND I, while the second part shall be between the end of ND II. Stipend for SCWE shall be paid through Industrial Training Fund (ITF). The SCWE shall be graded on a pass or fail basis. Where a student has satisfied all other requirements of the programme BUT FAILED SCWEs, he/she may only be allowed to repeat another four months SCWEs at his/own expenses.

When will Students be Indexed by the Council?

Indexing shall be at the beginning of first semester of ND II.

When will Students sit for Council’s Exam

Students will be able to write the Council’s Professional Exam for General Nursing after successful completion of HND 1 Nursing (equivalent to 3rd Year).

However, graduates of HND Nursing programme are required to sit for Council’s professional exam in either of the two options of specialization, namely: Midwifery for registration and licensing as a Registered Midwife (RM) and Public Health Nursing for registration and licensing as Registered Public Health Nurse (RPHN).

How many certificates and Licences will I get after completing HND Nursing

Graduates of HND Nursing will obtain 2 academic certificates and 2 professional licences. The academic certificates are ND Nursing Certificate and HND Nursing Certificate. The professional licences are RN Licence and RM or RPHN Licence.

Will Graduates of HND Nursing go for Internship?

Yes, graduates of HND Nursing programme shall undergo a one-year mandatory Supervised Clinical Attachment in an approved health facility or institution before proceeding to NYSC.

Will Graduates of HND Nursing go for NYSC?

Yes, graduates of HND Nursing will be mobilized for NYSC after completing a one-year mandatory Supervised Clinical Attachment (internship) in an approved health facility or institution.

Is the Admission for Basic Midwifery, Community Midwifery, Community Nursing and Post Basic Nursing aslo through JAMB?

NO. Only ND Nursing is through JAMB for now. Sale of application forms, entrance exams and interviews for Basic Midwifery, Community Midwifery, Community Nursing, Post Basic Nursing, Post Basic Midwifery, Refresher Basic Nursing and Refresher Basic Midwifery programmes will be done entirely by the Colleges.

Can I apply to HND Nursing with RN, RM, Post Basic, ND, CHEW or BSc Certificate?

NO. You cannot apply for HND Nursing with any of these. The ND/HND Nursing is a four-year UNINTERRUPTED programme i.e 2 years for ND and 2 years for HND. Only students that start with ND Nursing programme which is a non-terminal programme and obtain a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit) will proceed for HND Nursing.

However, NBTE (National Board for Technical Education) and NMCN are working on modalities for an abridgement programme for those with RN or RM to have ND/HND Nursing certificate.

Can I apply for ND Nursing and Community Nursing/Basic Midwifery at the same time?

Yes, since their Exams and Interviews are not in the same day.

Will there be an Introductory Weeding Exam during ND Nursing Programme?

No introductory exam during ND Nursing programme, apart from Post UTME Screening. However, students have must good academic standing to proceed from ND I to ND II. Also, students must earn a minimum CGPA of 2.5 (Lower Credit) to proceed to HND 1 and where a student scores below a CGPA of 2.5, he/she shall be required to repeat ND II and earn a minimum of CGPA 2.5 before proceeding to HND Nursing.

Can a Student who is studying another course in the same College apply for ND Nursing Programme?

Yes, but if admitted, he/she must self-withdraw from the previous programme.

Can candidates with Physical Disability Apply?

NO. Candidates with upper or lower limbs disability, vision impairment or hearing impairment are not eligible to apply for any programme of the College.

Is JAMB Required for ND Nursing and How Much is it?

Yes, JAMB UTME is required for this programme and the cost is 4700 naira. Candidates can only register at JAMB accredited centres nationwide. National Identity Number (NIN) is requirement for JAMB registration. To see list of JAMB accredited centers, visit www.jamb.gov.ng/Accreditted_Centres

  1. As I want to registered for jamb, I choose OAUTH as my first choice and the man that want to registered me for the jamb said that is not in the list of the Universities that he search for that I should choose Oau. My question is that am I still going to change the institution

    1. Yes. You’ll need to do change of Institution later. Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospital Complex School of Nursing is not a University, hence, you can’t find it under university, but should be found under Federal Monotechnics, that happened because the operator didn’t know this.

  2. I wrote jamb this year and I want to change it to oyo state college of nursing and midwifery for ND in nursing. What other requirements do I need and the cut off mark
