Predegree or JUPEB Programme, Which Should You Choose?
This is often a question asked by candidates, especially those who have written JAMB more than once. Some see these programs as a fast shortcut to entering a university, while others are enticed by the catchy phrase – “no JAMB” that often accompanies advertisements related to JUPEB or other A’level programs. This article aims to help the reader make the most informed decision when it comes to seeking admission via Predegree, JUPEB, or IJMB programs.
The Predegree Programme, Who Is It For?
Let me start by borrowing the introduction to Predegree as defined on OAU’s Predegree page: “The pre-degree programme is designed to be an intensive coaching curriculum that aims at preparing senior high school graduates (senior secondary) for university education. It is common knowledge that students carry over some deficiencies from secondary schools which inhibit their performances and individual self-development.”
“Given the prevalence of such situations, the pre-degree programme was initiated to help deal with the setbacks that often accompany such circumstances by providing students with a good head-start that will facilitate superior academic performance in the university.”
The above statements summarize who this program is designed for. This may extend to:
- Candidates who have written JAMB UTME more than once but always scored less than 200.
- Candidates who just finished secondary school but need to prepare for university life.
- Candidates who can afford the program and finish excellently.
Predegree Program Structure
Candidates who enroll in the Predegree program stay in the program for 9 months, during which they will be lectured on 4 subjects relevant to their proposed course of study. These same subjects are the ones they will write in JAMB UTME for that admission year. Yes, they will write JAMB again, but this time, they’ll do so as a better-prepared and more focused version of themselves.
Some Important Things to Note About Predegree
- – Predegree students are not university students yet.
- – Predegree results are valid for one year, just like the JAMB UTME of that year.
- – Predegree is not automatic admission; a candidate can fail Predegree.
- – Predegree is not a substitute for JAMB; in fact, failing JAMB may make the Predegree useless.
- – You can apply with awaiting O’level results.
- – You can only use Predegree to enter the university that organized the Predegree.
- – You can get your dream course via Predegree; however, admission is into 100 level.
JUPEB Program, Who Is It For?
The JUPEB/IJMB program is an Advanced Level program that prepares candidates eligible for admission into 200 level in universities that accept it as a valid qualification. This mode of admission that bypasses 100 level is known as “Direct Entry.” Since 100 level is bypassed, it also means you don’t need JAMB UTME for admission.
The program may be recommended for:
- Candidates who have good JAMB scores but are unable to meet the cutoff for their course, especially professional courses.
- Candidates who are a bit older and looking for means of admission by bypassing 100 level.
- Candidates who can afford the program.
JUPEB Program Structure
Since we’re bypassing 100 level, IJMB/JUPEB is a version of UTME and 100 level combined. The program is designed around 3 core subjects relevant to your proposed course, each representing 5 points. This means the maximum points you can get is 15 points (3 As). It also lasts for 9 months, during which a candidate will be lectured on the three subjects. At the end, there is a final JUPEB centralized exam, similar to a WAEC exam but in an advanced form.
Some Important Things to Note About JUPEB
- JUPEB students are also not university students yet until they apply for direct entry, purchase the school’s Direct Entry (DE) form, and the school offers them admission.
- Although JAMB UTME is not required, a candidate can decide to apply for and write it as a backup. But since you can only get admitted via a single method in a year, to use your JUPEB result for admission, you’ll need to later convert your UTME form to DE form.
Should We Compare?
Certainly, let’s draw some comparisons between the Predegree and JUPEB programs to help you make a better choice:
- 1. Duration: Both Predegree and JUPEB programs last for around 9 months, providing ample time for candidates to prepare. However, their objectives differ. Predegree aims to build a strong foundation for university life starting from 100 level, while JUPEB is designed to help students skip 100 level altogether and proceed directly to 200 level.
- 2. Admission Requirement: For Predegree, candidates will still need to take JAMB UTME. This means your performance in JAMB remains a determining factor in your admission. JUPEB, on the other hand, allows candidates to bypass JAMB UTME, making it a suitable choice for those looking to avoid the traditional entry process, also you may not be able to apply for JUPEB with awaiting results.
- 3. Cost Implications: JUPEB tends to be more expensive compared to Predegree due to the higher level of academic training provided, the direct entry benefits, and other associated fees. If budget is a concern, Predegree might be a more affordable route, though both programs require a financial commitment that is not less than 200 thousand naira depending on the center.
- 4. Outcome: With Predegree, you enter university at 100 level, while JUPEB allows you to start at 200 level through Direct Entry. If the time spent in university is a priority for you, then JUPEB might seem more appealing. However, Predegree offers the advantage of a smoother transition into university life, which can be especially valuable for those who need extra academic preparation.
- 5. Curriculum: The predegree course curriculum is quite less complex, similar to JAMB syllabus, but may have a little touch of 100 level topics, while that of IJMB/JUPEB is more complex, since it’s an advance level program, also may have a touch of 200 level topics.
Which Should You Choose?
The decision between JUPEB and Predegree ultimately depends on your individual needs and circumstances:
- If you’re looking to start from scratch with a solid academic foundation and don’t mind the extra JAMB year, Predegree is a great option. It’s also ideal for candidates who have struggled with JAMB UTME in the past and want a better chance to improve their scores and chances.
- On the other hand, if you’ve already attempted JAMB UTME, have a reasonable level of academic preparation, and want to save time by entering directly into 200 level, then JUPEB is the better choice. This is especially true if you’re older and looking for a more time-efficient route.
- Consider the costs too. JUPEB generally requires a larger budget, while Predegree is relatively more affordable. Either way, be prepared for tuition, textbooks, and accommodation expenses.
What If You Can’t Afford Any?
Not everyone can afford the cost of a Predegree or JUPEB program, but that doesn’t mean your journey to university has to end. If you’re unable to finance either of these programs, consider redirecting your resources towards self-preparation for JAMB UTME. Here’s how:
- 1. Invest in Quality Study Materials: Use the money you would have spent on Predegree or JUPEB to purchase JAMB-recommended textbooks, past questions, and exam guides. These materials can help you gain a deeper understanding of the subjects you’ll be tested on.
- 2. Private Tutorials: Consider enrolling in a private tutorial center that focuses specifically on JAMB preparation. These centers often have experienced tutors who can provide personalized guidance, and they come at a fraction of the cost of formal Predegree or JUPEB programs.
- 3. Online Resources: Take advantage of free online tutorials, videos, and practice tests. There are numerous platforms and YouTube channels dedicated to helping students ace their JAMB UTME. These can be just as effective when combined with discipline and a consistent study schedule.
- 4. Self-Study: With discipline and determination, self-study can be incredibly effective. Set a study schedule, focus on understanding the JAMB syllabus, and practice regularly with past questions. Remember, consistency is key.
- 5. Subscribe to a mentorship plan: Admission consultants like A. A. Badmus provide a personalized start to finish guide for applicants seeking admission into higher institutions, mentoring them with necessary needs along the admission journey for a meager token that last for the admission year.
Redirecting your funds to these alternatives can increase your chances of scoring higher in JAMB UTME, opening up the possibility of gaining admission through the traditional route. It may require more effort and discipline, but with the right approach, you can achieve your academic goals without the additional cost.
