The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has introduced new admission statuses on its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS) for the 2026 admissions exercise. Candidates checking their admission status may now see new terms such as Proposed, Recommended. These new statuses are designed to show the different stages of the admission process more clearly. This article help you understand this new development and know exactly where you stand and what to do next.

What Each JAMB CAPS Status Means

Not Admitted

“Not Admitted” is the first admission status everyone will see, this means that no admission offer has been recorded for you at the time of checking. However, this does not necessarily mean the admission exercise is over, or you will not be admitted. Your chosen school may still release admissions in batches, supplementary lists, or transfer options depending on available spaces.

What to do: Keep checking your school and JAMB portal and verify that you meet all requirements for your chosen course. Also, ensure you have chosen the school whose admission you are waiting for as the first choice.

Proposed for Admission by Your Institution

If your CAPS status shows “Proposed for Admission by Your Institution,” it means your documents has been reviewed, and you are qualified for admission, so, your school admission officer has selected you for admission. However, this is not yet a final offer, the Head of Admissions in your school need to review the offer then recommend you for admission to JAMB.

What to do: Keep checking your CAPS for updates, ensure all that is required on the school portal has been done.

Recommended for Admission to JAMB

The next status you may see is “Recommended for Admission to JAMB.” This shows that your admission process has progressed beyond the institution’s initial proposal stage. The head of admissions in your institution has recommended you for admission, and the process is moving closer towards final approval. While this is a positive sign, you should continue to monitor your CAPS portal because the final “Admitted” status is what confirms your admission. Please note that the recommended offer could be disapproved by JAMB if you do not meet the admission requirements.

What to do: Confirm that your Oโ€™level has been uploaded to the JAMB portal, uploading can be done using the verification method just introduced by JAMB in 2026 or by visiting the nearest CBT center in person.

Admission in Progress

“Admission in Progress” generally means that your admission is still being processed and will complete anytime soon. At this point, change of course or change of institution cannot be done, because the decision to offer you admission is now locked in.

What to do: Keep checking your school portal and ensure your O’Level results are uploaded correctly. Do not attempt to change course or school.

Congratulations, Admission has been APPROVED by JAMB

When your CAPS status shows “Approved,” you have received an admission offer. You can now proceed to ACCEPT or REJECT the offer on JAMB CAPS. When you see the congratulations message, carefully confirm the institution and course details before taking any action.

What to do: If you want the admission, accept it based on the instructions here, then proceed to print JAMB admission letter on the JAMB portal, this is very important. If you do not want the admission, reject it so that the school can withdraw the offer and another school you are considering can offer you admission after you made the new school first choice on JAMB portal.

What You Should Know and Do

  • Candidates need to understand that it is their school that offers admission, and JAMB approves it after all requirements has been reviewed and met.
  • You are advised to regularly monitor your JAMB CAPS and institution portals for updates. If you see “Proposed” or “Recommended,” remain hopeful but do not treat it as final admission yet. Continue checking until your status changes to “Congratulations, your admission has been Approved”.
  • Ensure your O’Level results are uploaded to JAMB, as awaiting results must be uploaded before a candidate can be considered for admission. Also, confirm that your school and course details on your JAMB profile match the application being processed.
  • For candidates still awaiting admission, patience and regular checking remain important as the admission process continues. Admission offers may be released in batches, so keep monitoring your portal.

Important Warning

Do not pay anyone who claims they can change your admission status or guarantee admission for cash. No genuine person can change your CAPS decision. If you see “Proposed” or “Recommended,” your admission process is simply progressing through different stages. Avoid paying agents who promise to change your status to “Admitted”.

Stay informed, keep checking your CAPS portal, and follow only official communication from JAMB and your chosen institution.
