When you meet the requirements for a particular programme, the faculty handling that programme forwards your details to the school admissions office to be processed for admission. The school admissions office then sends your details to JAMB, where your admission appears on CAPS.
If the programme that forwarded your details matches the one you applied for on JAMB CAPS, you will see “Admission in Progress (AIP)” and later receive your admission directly.
However, if you do not meet the requirements for your chosen programme, the faculty cannot admit you. The school may still decide to give you admission through another programme, especially if you have a strong result or fall under certain categories such as OAU pre-degree or JUPEB candidates.
For example, if you applied for Pharmacy but did not meet the cut-off, the Faculty of Pharmacy cannot admit you. The school may then consider you for another programme with available space and forward your details there. Once that new programme offers you admission, it becomes a transfer, because the course now differs from what you have on your JAMB CAPS.
Before the new admission can reflect on CAPS, you must first accept the transfer at the “Transfer Approval” section of JAMB CAPS. After accepting, your CAPS will change to AIP, and your admission will later appear.
Transfer simply means another programme different from your first choice has offered you admission.
Some programmes receive fewer applicants, so the school fills those spaces by transferring qualified candidates from oversubscribed programmes.
This is why someone who chose Law might later be transferred to another course. It was not the Law Faculty that transferred them; it was the new programme that offered them admission instead.
Sometimes, students even request to be considered for another course they prefer, but not all requests are granted because each programme has a limited admission quota.
It’s also important to note that not everyone who applied will be given admission, and not everyone will be transferred either.
However, all qualified JUPEB and pre-degree candidates will be given admission—either into their course of choice or by transfer to another suitable programme.
