Say Goodbye to JAMB, Enter 200-Level Directly!
Gain University Admission via JUPEB/IJMB. Enjoy low fees!
Seeing your JAMB result does one or two things to you, either you are pumped and already mentally picking the hostel you want to stay in school, or you are staring at the screen, wondering if JAMB has a personal grudge against you. Either way, the score is out and now the real work starts.
What most people do not realise is that the score is just the beginning. The decisions you make in the weeks after results come out are what actually determine whether you get admitted this year. A lot of well-prepared candidates lose their chance, not because they did not do well, but because they slipped up in the follow-up process. In this article, we will discuss 5 mistakes that has happened to candidates over the years after seeing their JAMB UTME results, and how you can prevent it from happening to you.
Changing Your Course the Moment You Feel Unsatisfied With Your Score
This one happens within hours of results dropping. You see your score, decide it is not strong enough for your original course, and immediately head to the JAMB CBT center to switch course to something you assume is easier to get into. Feels like a smart, proactive move. Often, it is not.
The problem is that course changes made in that emotional window are rarely well-researched. People switch to a course they think is “easier to get into” without checking whether their subject combination qualifies, without looking at the cut-off marks, or thinking seriously about whether they want to study that subject for four years. Some end up in courses they cannot stand, studying just to survive rather than to actually learn.
If you feel the need to change your course, calm down, take a few days first, research the new course properly, check the requirements. Then decide. You can also speak to an educational consultant to assist you in making decision, we are here to guide you as your admission companion.
Relaxing After JAMB Like the Exam Season Is Over
It is not over. JAMB is one step. Post-UTME is the next one, and this is where a lot of people get caught off guard.
Post-UTME performance adds directly into your aggregate score, and at most competitive universities, the aggregate is the actual deciding factor. A candidate who scored 280 in JAMB but did not do well in post-UTME can very easily be overtaken by someone who scored 230 but prepared properly for the screening exercise. This happens, cans still happen but we do not want it to happen to you.
The period between JAMB results and post-UTME registration opens quickly and closes just as fast. Start preparing now, in fact, some schools already released their forms.
Treating Rumours as Reliable Information
Every admission season comes with its own rumour and fake information cycle. Cut-off marks that nobody can verify, policies that “someone heard” changed. Departmental cutoffs/requirements shared as facts by people who have never checked the official portal – as well, fake Drs online who waiting to scam you by saying you should call them for admission slots.
The safest rule is simple: if you cannot point to where it is written on the JAMB or institution website, or verified educational sources, do not act on it. One wrong piece of information can cost you your form fee, your time, or worse, your admission slot and the risk of being scammed. Stick to proper guidance.
Leaving the Process Entirely in Someone Else’s Hands
There is nothing wrong with getting help, either from Parents, older siblings, secondary school teachers, or admission consultants. The problem is completely disengaging and assuming someone else is watching your process with the same urgency and passion you should have.
You are the one who needs to know your aggregate, you are the one who needs to understand your school’s departmental requirements. You are the one who needs admission. Other people can support you, but if you are not paying attention yourself, you will miss things. Admission processes move fast and updates come without warning. Nobody monitors another person’s admission with the same urgency they would monitor their own. So, if someone is assisting you, follow up by asking them for updates, and also be checking the school portal or JAMB portal if you can.
Assuming a “Low JAMB UTME” Score Disqualifies You
This is arguably the most damaging mistake on the list.
Candidates who score in ranges they consider disappointing sometimes remove themselves from the process entirely without doing the actual research.
The Nigerian admission system runs several rounds. After the first batch of admissions, there are supplementary lists, change of institution options, and institutional offers. A score of 240 that does not work for your first-choice school at a particular time might be exactly what works in your second-choice institution for the same course or different course.
Before you conclude your score is not enough, check. Actually check, ask educational consultants. You might be surprised.
Getting admitted is less about having a perfect score and more about navigating the process with your eyes open, and the right information. Stay informed, move quickly when windows open, and do not let one disappointing number convince you to stop paying attention.
And if you have reason to start again, start early, with courage and determination. Whatever you decided, we are here to walk with you, with proper admission guidance, as your admission companion.
