All You Need to Know About Admission into 200L without JAMB but via IJMB/JUPEB Programme

You might have been wondering, how can I gain admission to 200L without taking JAMB UTME or having had a degree before? What is IJMB and JUPEB programme about? How is it different from Predegree programme? These and many related questions are what I’ve set out to unravel in this article.

What s JUPEB about?

The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) is a national examination body approved by the Federal Government of Nigeria on 30th December 2013. It was formally established on April 4, 2014 by a consortium of ten (10) partnering Nigerian Universities and currently has many partners & affiliate universities including the University of Lagos (UNILAG), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) amongst others – the programme is also being run by private centers who work with these affiliate institutions.

Candidates who enroll for the JUPEB programme in different centers are exposed to 8-10 months (commonly referred to as 1-year) of lectures on approved courses divided into 2 contacts (2 semesters) on which the final examination is then conducted by JUPEB at the end of the programme. Thus, candidates who participated in JUPEB are eligible to seek Direct Entry admissions into University courses at the 200 Level in Nigerian and foreign universities.

JUPEB provides another platform for providing access to tertiary education. Thousands of students apply and sit for UTME yearly but only a few are successful in securing admission into Nigerian universities. Most of these candidates, who fail to secure admission, reapply in subsequent years thereby worsening the admission burden in Nigerian Universities. The worst dilemma is that UTME result is only valid for one (1) year, as against the JUPEB result which has no expiry date.

This is particularly why JUPEB Advanced Level programme is highly recommended. Other Advanced level programmes, apart from JUPEB include NAGCE, IJMB, and CAMBRIDGE (acceptable by UI), among others.

Differences between IJMB and JUPEB

Although both are similar A’level programmes in Nigeria has similar duration and similar syllabi, just like saying WAEC and NECO are O’level results, IJMB is being moderated by Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria (ABU) while JUPEB is being moderated by the University of Lagos (UNILAG). IJMB examination is usually conducted every February yearly while the JUPEB examination is usually conducted May/June every year. They also differ in the specific schools that accept their result as a valid entry tender, JUPEB is accepted by more schools than IJMB. Another difference is that the cost implication of JUPEB is higher than that of IJMB

Differences between JUPEB and Predegree

Pre-degree programme is a remedial program organized by a University in order to prepare fresh secondary school graduates for admission into University and also to bridge the lapses in their O’level knowledge, both are similar in the duration of the course but here are some differences yous should note as regards to JUPEB and Predegree:

  1. Predegree is O’level Based (Ordinary-Level), JUPEB is A’level (Advanced level)
  2. Predegree is for admission into 100L while JUPEB/IJMB is for admission into 200 Level
  3. Predegree students need to sit for UTME to gain Admission, JAMB UTME is not needed for JUPEB
  4. Only 3 subjects are needed with no English in JUPEB, 4 subjects related to JAMB subject combination are needed in Predegree
  5. In terms of course complexity, pre-degree is fairly complex while JUPEB is more complex because it is an advanced level programme.
  6. Just like JAMB, the Predegree result expires in one admission year, JUPEB and IJMB result does not expire.
  7. Predegree results can only be used for one school JUPEB results can be used for a different school, you can do JUPEB in UNILAG and use it to apply to OAU.
  8. Cost implication of Predegree is lesser than that of JUPEB and similar to that of IJMB

  10. In terms of recommendation, secondary school leavers with good backgrounds in O’level can go for JUPEB or anyone whose capacity can handle the workload, while those with weak backgrounds can apply for predegree.

How Do JUPEB and IJMB Work?

Prospective IJMB/IJMB candidates are required to select any THREE (3) A/L JUPEB Subject Combination identified with their preferred course of study in the university be it Science, Art or Social Science Course.

Candidates would then be lectured on the 3 subjects (broken down into sub courses) for the stipulated period at their respective Study Centre and thereafter sit for the final examination. Practical aspects of practical courses like Physics, and Chemistry will also be taught using the necessary equipment.

Upon completion of the programme, successful candidates will be issued certificates based on their level of performance which bear Letter Grades of A, B, C, D, E, or F in each of the three subjects, and then accordingly utilize their JUPEB certificate to secure admission into 200level in any Nigeria tertiary institution via Direct Entry. Each of the subjects has a max grade of A (5 points) which means if I have 3 A’s, I will be having a total point of 15 in JUPEB and so on.

Is JUPEB a Valid Admission Entry Route for Admission?

Yes, JUPEB is valid as it is accredited by the Federal Government, NUC and approved by JAMB as a mode of entry for Direct entry admission to 200L in Universities – other modes of direct entry include IJMB, ND, NCE, and Bsc. in various courses.
