Say Goodbye to JAMB, Enter 200-Level Directly!
Gain University Admission via JUPEB/IJMB. Enjoy low fees!
I know you’re planning for your university admission in 2026 and you’re probably hearing different opinions from friends and family. “Go for JUPEB, it’s easier!” or “Just focus on JAMB and write Post UTME.” But how do you know which path is truly for you?
Choosing the wrong one can cost you not just money, but a whole year. In this post, I will break down everything you need to know about the JUPEB programme and how it compares to the JAMB UTME/Predegree route. By the end, you will know exactly which path fits your situation. Let’s dive in.
1. What is JUPEB and How Does It Work for Direct Entry?
JUPEB stands for the Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board. It’s a one-year advanced-level programme that allows you to gain admission into 200 Level in any university in Nigeria through Direct Entry (DE).
Think of it as an alternative to A’levels, IJMB, or a NCE programme. You’ll take lectures in a combination of three subjects related to your desired university course, and then write a final exam at the end of the programme. If you pass well, you can use that result to apply for admission without going through the JAMB UTME stress for 100 Level.
Here’s the simple breakdown:
- Duration: 9-12 months (One academic session)
- Goal: Secure a Direct Entry admission into 200 Level.
- How it works: You register, attend lectures at an accredited centre, pass your exams, and then use the statement of result to apply for DE in your chosen university.
Important Note: You will still need to apply for the JAMB Direct Entry form when it’s out, but you won’t need to write the UTME exam. Your JUPEB result is your ticket.
2. Who Should Go for JUPEB?
JUPEB isn’t for everyone, but it’s a perfect match for certain candidates. You are a good fit for JUPEB if:
- ·You have a specific dream university in mind, especially a very competitive one (like UNILAG, OAU, or UI) and you want a more controlled pathway into 200 Level.
- You struggled with JAMB UTME before or you’re not confident about scoring very high in a single-sitting computer-based test, but you believe you can do well in JUPEB.
- You have at least five (5) O’Level credits in relevant subjects already. This is crucial because you’ll be using it for Direct Entry.
- You prefer a school-style learning environment with continuous assessments over a single, high-stakes exam.
- You are a fresh secondary school leaver who is also an A student.
- You have a budget of over 500k to spend on the program and determined to pass.
3. Who Should Stick with JAMB UTME and Predegree?
On the other hand, the traditional JAMB UTME route (which includes Predegree programmes) is still the best and most straightforward path for many. You should stick with JAMB UTME if:
- You are a fresh secondary school leaver without any prior JAMB experience and not an ‘A’ student.
- Your O’Level results are not complete (you are still awaiting some credits). JUPEB requires your complete O’Level results, while you can apply for UTME/Predegree with “awaiting result.”
- You are on a tight budget. Let’s be honest, JUPEB programmes are often more expensive than JAMB forms and Predegree fees.
- You are aiming for a course where Direct Entry is very limited. Some courses and universities have very few DE slots, making the 100 Level route through JAMB more secure.
- You have consistently scores less than 180 in JAMB in 2 UTME trials
What about Predegree?
OAU Predegree, for example, is excellent if you want to enter 100 Level in OAU specifically. Your goal is to use your Predegree score, combined with a good JAMB score, to get admission. If you want 200 Level entry into multiple universities, JUPEB is the answer.
4. The Major Advantage and “Secret” Risk of JUPEB
The Advantage:
The biggest pull of JUPEB is bypassing the intense competition for 100 Level admission. You are competing for the Direct Entry quota, which is often less crowded. It gives you a full year to focus deeply on just three subjects.
One more thing to note
The risk is not about the programme being hard. The risk is that not all universities accept JUPEB for all courses. Before you pay a kobo, you must go to the official website of your dream university and check their Direct Entry requirements for your specific course. Confirm that they accept JUPEB
5. How to Get Your JUPEB Form
Getting the form is simple. You can apply through accredited study centres nationwide. However, you must be careful to choose a recognised and reliable centre to avoid stories that touch.
